Fireworks ban Vendée

On December 23rd 2019 Benoît Brocart, prefect of the Vendée, has issued a temporary ban on fireworks as a preventive measure for the end of year festivities next week that prohibits the port, transport and storage of fireworks and pyrotechnic articles. The decree stipulates that:

  • The transfer, for consideration or not, and the use of all categories of fireworks, including firecrackers and pyrotechnic articles are prohibited for individuals throughout the department of Vendée from Monday, December 30, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. to Thursday January 2, 2020 at 9:00 a.m.

In addition, the prefect also issued a decree for a temporary ban on buying "take-away" fuel during the same time period.

  • The purchase and transport of any fuel by means of jerry cans, containers, cans or flasks is prohibited from Monday December 30, 2019 at 9 a.m. to Thursday January 2, 2020 at 9 a.m. throughout the Vendée department, with the exception of products specifically intended for the supply of individual heating appliances.

Tips to protect and comfort your pets!

We are quite skeptical that this 'last minute' scheme or decree will actually do anything at all to prevent fireworks at private new year's celebrations. After all, certain grocery stores have fireworks for sale as we speak. Our motto is better safe than sorry, and for people with pets we're including a short list of tips to help keep them safe.

  • Give your dog/cat plenty of playtime and exercise earlier in the day.
  • Keep your pets inside during fireworks,
  • Keep the house cooler rather than warmer.
  • Keep your pets company.  Being with them, comforting them, being relaxed yourself will help them feel more relaxed as well.
  • Dogs and cats often prefer small enclosed areas. Use a crate if they're already used to it. However, don't lock them in anywhere as they may hurt themselves in a frantic bid to get out.
  • Keep the windows shut (reduce noise) and close curtains or shutters to remove the  visual stimulation of fireworks.
  • Make sure your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar (in case they make a run for it.)
  • Give the dog his favourite treat or a dog chew or a favourite toy (though we must say, this would never work for ours... they would fling it across the room to make a point!)
  • Use a "thunder shirt" or "anxiety wrap" - they are super efficient in helping the dog feel comforted. Don't have one on hand? Wrap your dog in a blanket like a burrito.
  • Play relaxing music well before the start of fireworks. It's considered "sensory enrichment". There is also specially-designed psychoacoustic music called Through a Dog’s Ear.
